The Question Today Is: Can A Wish or A Prayer Bring More Clients?
Creating an internal belief or making an intention and seeing results in the real world, like suddenly having more clients… is that for real?
It’s tricky, because spiritual practice does not work like a vending machine where you put in a prayer and a candy bar drops down. At the same time, it happens. I’ve seen it happen for myself, and for many clients and other people.
Read about Kim’s experience with the Heart of Money, and then I’ll explain further. The juicy parts are in the final two paragraphs, but the whole thing is worth reading to get the context:
“I am so grateful to Mark and the Heart of Business staff for what is given in the Heart of Money Transformational Journey. For me personally this course has begun a healing and transformation in the area of my relationship to money as well as to myself, my partner, and to the Divine.
“I will not lie…there have been some things that came up for me that I have kept locked away because it would have been painful to look at them…things like where I have been entitled with money, careless with money, where money has been the object of intense power struggles with my partner, where I have been in scarcity or avoidance about money…I could go on!
“But how freeing to be able to look at these things with such support and compassion from Mark and the partners that I have had in this course. In other words, how I have “been” with money has a lot to do with how I have “been” as a person….I am grateful to be able to have the teachings from this course recorded and I plan to come back to it again and again.
“Also, my business has been steadily growing throughout this course….without any external change in my marketing…it seems related to my willingness to open my heart to these teachings and then it seems that the healing and abundance that I am receiving is flowing out into the world.
“Just one example….my teaching partner called last week to say that a workshop we were scheduled to teach this week had only one person enrolled (my partner has been doing the interfacing with the facility sponsoring this workshop). We decided that if there were enough enrollments for a small class that he would teach it without me because I taught the last one. I took the class off of my calendar and even scheduled a client during that time–all the while praying to be shown how I could be of more service in my work.
“My teaching partner called back this week to say that the enrollments had been coming in that he suggested to the facility that they cap enrollments at 30! We have never had to set a cap before.
“I cannot stress enough that I did nothing on the outer to “create” this result in the last week; it was no longer on my radar!…I really believe that it has to do with my willingness to heal my heart and take loving, conscious action around money.
I cannot recommend this course highly enough!”

Okay, what’s really going on here? Is this a thinly-veiled way to make you read a testimonial about the Heart of Money course, or is there a point to it?
Well, okay, I did want you to get how cool the course is, and it was really fun for me to read what she wrote. And yet, this is one of the biggest bugaboos in spiritual business work.
The course wasn’t filling, she had dropped out to let her partner teach solo because of extremely low enrollment. Then Kim made some internal changes, no other external marketing happened, and suddenly the class enrollment ballooned beyond anything they’d seen before.
Let’s be clear: you can’t force an outcome like that. You can’t simply make some intention or decide you believe something and then dependably get a specific outcome. You just can’t control the universe like that. The Divine is more powerful than your ego, no contest.
But there is something going on.
The Experiment x 17
We did an exercise in our Opening the Moneyflow year-long course where each person said their one compelling sentence marketing message, the best version they had yet. Which means that a lot of them were still sloppy, first draft attempts.
But, I told them to take a moment in their heart, connect, and speak the One Compelling Sentence to the group without any apology or explanation before or after. To just say it, as is. To stand strong where they were.
And 17 people did just that, one right after the other.
What happened was that the clarity, the lack of apology and story meant that our hearts opened to each person. Trust was deepened. People reported tears in their eyes.
This is the attraction that happens when the door to love is open. What each person did was to stop pushing love and acceptance away, which is what apologies and explanations do. They just gave from the light within themselves. And we all felt it and wanted to move towards it.
Most People Have Shut the Door
Most people are great at giving, and less good at taking or receiving what is coming back. In Kim’s case she had been giving and giving over many years.
In the course Kim really worked hard at profoundly opening her heart and being able to receive what was coming toward her. It was challenging and, at times, painful for her. Humbling. I know not just because she told me, but because I’ve had to go through that process myself more than once.
Here’s the key you must understand about those people who rushed in to swell enrollment in the course. She didn’t make them appear, she didn’t “manifest” them through her own will like pulling a rabbit out of a hat.
How do I know? Because neither she, nor others that have experienced this, can reliably reproduce these kinds of dramatic results. Instead, what had been happening was that there was a flood mounting outside the door to her heart, and when she stopped holding the door shut, it came in. Whoosh! Big flood!
Not everyone experiences it exactly like Kim did. That was a rather dramatic example, and one which didn’t repeat in the same way for her after that.
However, what she and others can and do experience moving forward is a lot more ease in receiving overall. Yes, she’ll still have to market her classes and engage with people. No, she can’t just sit in a room and pray for more people to show up and do nothing else.
What she does know now and can repeat, whether sitting in a room or doing her marketing, is to continue to keep her heart open, to surrender the resistance to the love that wants to come back to her in response to the generosity and caring she is giving.
With that humble opening of the heart, you start to see at least two things:
- You find the doorway open to taking action that you couldn’t before. An open heart can dissolve trouble in writing promotional copy for your offer, or in reaching out to ask for help in spreading the word.
- Your actions begin to look subtly different. The things you are able to do change. They might be softer, or more raw.
For example, instead of stepping into a big rah-rah energy that can push your best clients away, you move forward feeling grounded and more open. Your best clients recognize your open-hearted presence and come toward you.

Great post, Mark and a great reminder of the power of surrendering to love over fear and letting go of outcome – what happens inside is so important! I haven’t got a story quite like Kim’s, but I was doing some Google research earlier today and was amazed at a couple of websites I found with exactly the information I needed and more. Ironically I hadn’t expected to find them and so was open to whatever came up!
Leda- so wonderful to begin to experience that opening in that small way. It’s the small steps that are so significant, I find.
Hi Mark, I’ve had something like Kim’s happen before — many times. It usually happens once I let go of my grip on something and practise detachment.
I remember a few years ago going on an overseas holiday, with a four day stopover in Paris on the way home. I did my budget but realised I was $1000 short (the amount I needed for Paris). I tried getting more hours at my job, to no avail. And then I decided to give up on the idea, and considered changing my ticket. And voila (pardon the French pun), out of ‘nowhere’ an offer for my first corporate workshop gig appeared, through word of mouth.
They said “How much for a half-day workshop?” And I said “$1000”.
Although I’m wary of claiming a ‘formula’, I know detachment has always been a key for me. It’s at that moment of letting go that something happens — not always what I imagined or asked for. But arriving at detachment is not easy LOL.

I greatly loved this post, and my heart exhaled in your teaching. I particularly love the exercise of speaking from your heart. I’ve used that exercise not just with money, but also to come up with my 1 sentence of what I do, to write promotional copy, to write newsletters and more. And when I use it, and my heart opens, yes, something shifts….
Even more than seeing the effect on the outside, I feel it inside my heart. And the writing almost seems to write itself…
My business is going through some beautiful, encouraging and *painful* growing pains right now, and I’m resting in your teaching to ride the waves. Your work gives me tremendous courage, especially on days when I just want to throw my hands in the air and be a writer-hermit rather than a, gulp, business person.
Now for a practical question: My husband and I are eager to take the Heart of Money course, and yet the timing wasn’t right for us this go round. Will you be offering the course later on in the year?

As for Heart of Money, unfortunately I only teach it once a year. We will be offering the home study version in a special shortly. That, in conjunction with the Alumni Community if you were moved to join, could replicate to a great deal the experience of going through class live.
Really I don’t think so it happens. By end of the day its just your business and nothing more than that. If prayer can do, then it should happens to almost everyone.
Thanks for this post. Having belief and faith that everything will come to you at the right time and when you need it is something that we follow in our business and day to day life. Not setting expectations of how things should play out, what the results should be is something that we have come to realise. When you set expectations you narrow the focus and you don’t allow anything greater to come in from the universe. You can have goals and targets but do not force how you achieve them, just know that they will happen so long as you take action and move towards the general direction, from there you will be amazed at the synchronicity and unfolding that happens.
