Yesterday I received an email from a former client who was freaking out because I’d published an article using her and her biz as a case study. She’d since chosen to close that business but I guess her name & biz name are showing up in Google.

She’s freaking because her ex is challenging monthly support payments and she believes the search results in Google are evidence he can use to show she is running a profitable biz.

What hurts most is that she was thrilled when I wrote the article because it would help her biz get found. Now it sounds like I was bad and irresponsible for writing the article.

I felt so stung by her email. Ow.

The cool thing is that on the tail of my hurt & anger I could also feel compassion for her situation which enabled me to step back and call her and say “Hey call me and let’s talk.”

This is new for me. It’s a very different way of handling these situations.

I’ve had your email with this article sitting in my inbox for a few weeks because I thought it was outstanding and planned to respond. I’ve read it several times and don’t have anything to add, but I wanted to let you know how useful I found the steps you outlined. Since I’m in startup mode, I’m looking at a lot of trees and often lose track of the forest, despite previous business training and experience. Thanks for giving us the HOB take on some crucial business basics!
