The Most Dangerous Myth

I’m here to debunk the Most Dangerous Myth
in business: The Bootstrap Myth.

A bootstrap is a loop sewn onto your boot so you can pull it on yourself. The Bootstrap Myth is the myth that you can do it all yourself without outside help. But your business is not a boot.

Nearly everyone who is truly successful has had help, and plenty of it. Read the books of anyone you consider truly successful- someone who has not only had worldly success, but is happy in their heart as well. When you open the book, go to the acknowledgments page. How many people are listed there? How much help did they get? And who did they get help from?

If you look carefully, you will see that they have received help from many different places. Some love and support from family. Some spiritual direction. Support and help from friends and colleagues. And some professional help.

If it’s so important, why don’t people get help?
It’s difficult to ask for help, especially in business. When we own a business, or have reached a position of responsibility, we can sometimes feel as if the sharks are circling, and one miss-step will doom us.

Even if it’s an irrational fear (and sometimes it’s not), this is how we’re feeling. We’ve spent a lot of time building up defenses, so it’s hard to know when it’s safe to let those defenses down. What if you choose the wrong help? What if it doesn’t work?

These questions are completely legitimate, but you are asking them too early. The first question is, “Do I need help?” Or, you could phrase it another way: “Is what I’m doing working to my satisfaction, and, if not, do I know what else to do?”

If you answered “Yes” to the first question, or “No” to the second question, then that’s a strong indication that you, like the rest of us, could use some help. You aren’t deciding yet what kind of help you are needing, or where to get it – just that help is what you are looking for next. Once you agree to that, you can free yourself up to search for what kind of help you need, and from whom.

Okay, so I need help. Now what?
Now you get to look for help. This website was created as a resource to access many different types of help for your business. And, rest assured that yes, I am indeed receiving help myself, as much as I can get.

Your business is a precious thing, and I don’t expect you to trust your dreams with me right off the bat. That’s why I offer as much as I can for free, in easy, foundational bites. Because I’m the same way: I want all the help I can get, but it has to be the right help. So I suggest you first taste the Heart of Business.
